Scientific interpretation of aromatherapy – why can smell affect mood?

Modern scientific research has revealed the mechanism by which aromatherapy affects emotions: when essential oil molecules enter the limbic system of the brain (the area that controls emotions and memory) through the nasal cavity, they trigger the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine. For example:

Lavender: Lowers cortisol levels and relieves anxiety.

Citrus (sweet orange, grapefruit): Boosts spirits and fights seasonal depression.

Rosemary: Enhances concentration and is suitable for use at work and study.

A 2019 Japanese study found that after using lemon aromatherapy in the office, the error rate of employees decreased by 33%. However, it should be noted that aromatherapy is not a panacea. Sensitive people may be allergic to certain ingredients. It is recommended to start with a low concentration.

Recommended combination: Use mint + lemon to wake up the brain in the morning, and lavender + chamomile to help sleep at night.
